Maha Bali, the distinguished grandson of Prahalada, held the reins of a powerful and knowledgeable kingdom, characterized by a deep reverence for wisdom. In a time-honored tale, Maha Bali was engaged in a sacred yagna, when an enigmatic young boy, emanating a radiant glow, made his entrance into the ceremonial space. Adhering to the tradition of hospitality, Maha Bali extended a warm welcome to this luminous visitor and inquired about his desires. Responding in a voice as youthful as his appearance, the boy humbly requested an expanse of land that could be measured by the span of three footprints.

Without hesitation, Maha Bali swiftly acquiesced, much to the dismay of his Guru Shukracharya. The wise sage cautioned Maha Bali, revealing that the esteemed guest was none other than Lord Vishnu Himself.

According to the age-old legend, almost immediately after being granted the three footsteps, the youthful Vamana underwent a spectacular transformation into a colossal form called Trivikrama. With his first step, he spanned the entirety of the earth, and with the second step, he encompassed the entire sky. In a striking demonstration, these two strides enveloped not only Mahabali’s vast kingdom but also the entirety of the terrestrial and celestial realms. Turning to Mahabali, Vamana inquired about the placement of his third step.In a magnificent display of devotion and surrender, King Maha Bali, who happened to be the grandson of the Lord’s most devoted follower, Prahlada, wholeheartedly presented his head for Vamana’s third step, symbolizing his unwavering reverence and submission.

The Lord, acknowledging his profound act of surrender, bestowed his blessings upon Maha Bali. He destined him for a glorious role as the future Indra in the forthcoming Manvanthara, while also assuring that He would personally safeguard the gates of Pathala.Responding to the pleas of Maha Bali’s subjects, Lord Vishnu granted permission for Maha Bali to rejoin his kingdom from Pathala, albeit temporarily, once every year. This joyous occasion, when Maha Bali could reunite with his people, evolved into the celebrated Onam festival.
